New to Field Hockey?

Everything a new family needs to know — what the sport is, who can play, what to bring, and how to sign up.

The basics

What Is Field Hockey?

Field hockey is a fast-paced team sport played on grass or artificial turf. Players use a hooked stick to dribble, pass, and shoot a small, hard ball, working together to score in the opposing team's goal.

A full-sided game has 11 players per team, including a goalkeeper. Younger players often play small-sided games on smaller fields so everyone gets more touches on the ball.

It's a sport built on skill, speed, and teamwork — and it's easy to start. Many players pick up a stick for the first time in elementary or middle school.

    What to bring

    Basic Equipment

    • Field hockey stick

Sized to the player — when standing, the top of the stick should reach about the hip bone. Beginners don't need an expensive stick.

    • Shin guards

Required for all players. Worn under long socks.

    • Mouthguard

Required for all players at every practice and game.

    • Protective goggles

Field-hockey-specific eye protection is required in U.S. scholastic play.

    • Cleats or turf shoes

Choose based on whether you'll play on grass or artificial turf.

    • Water bottle

Label it with your athlete's name.

Goalkeepers wear additional protective gear; ask your coach about what the program provides. Coaches will confirm exact equipment requirements for each program.
